BIG GUY’S MX SCHOOL
Guy Longwell qualified? You bet! Class was again in session at Big Guy’s MX School at the FLY MX PARK just north of Fly, OH on State Route 7. After a short introductory presentation by Guy and son Cody; hole shots, cornering and properly entering and exiting a jump were the order of business for the first half of the day. Sometimes, all it takes is a shift in your position or hitting a jump with the proper hand/arm position, foot position or maybe a different gear to create your own style and figure what works for you. Guy can help you figure it out.
Guy Longwell began his racing career in 1971 as a 16 year old riding a Honda 125 SL. “I didn’t take a season to just ride, I went straight into racing it too.” Due to the higher level of competition today, a young rider should take plenty of time to learn their bike and what they can do with it before they get on the track to compete. Of course, you should always make sure you wear all of the proper protective equipment and gear, this is a must at Fly MX Park. Check out the “SCHOOL” page on the web site for a complete list of all required equipment and gear that must be worn at the track whether for practice, school or race day. In the 70’s, there wasn’t the organized MX racing that we have today and certainly there weren’t bikes equipped with suspension such as they are today. Guy was one of the pioneers from the local area to attend and compete at motorcycle events. He ran the very first “Blackwater 100” in 1975 on a 450 Maico Enduro and also ran the very first “High-Point” Motocross race. If you ever had the opportunity to attend or race the Blackwater 100, you know what a grueling race it was. It was titled “The Toughest Race in America” in its prime. Guy led the Blackwater 100 overall for half of the race in 1978, until he blew a Fox air shock and DNF’d. However, he went on to win several classes over the history of the Blackwater, the last being the Open A class in 1991 on a Yamaha Banshee. Yes, you read it correctly, a four wheeler!
Guy rode them all over the years (events and vehicles), he was 2nd Overall in the 1986 GNCC National Series on a Honda 250R 3-wheeler. His first Pro Race was in 1975 at Belpre “Bad Lands” track. A lot of National AMA Pros came to race there at the time, because it was a “big money” track. Guy finished with a 6th in the Open Pro class on a 400cc Penton; he was sponsored that year by Johnson’s Cycle Accessories, a Penton, Maico, Hodaka and Rokon dealer in Hannibal, OH. Winning that year was Tony DiStefano, who was the AMA 250 National Champion in 1975. Guy also raced at Honda Hills in Newark, Ohio; it was also a popular track in the 70’s, the Trans-Am Pro Nationals were held there. Europeans frequently raced at this track as it was one of the toughest motocross tracks in the US.
In 1990 and 1991, Guy had Yamaha factory support in the GNCC’s. He won the Open A in 1988 and 1989 earning that support and was runner up in the 1990 National GNCC Series. In ’91 he rode both bikes and quads and in ’92 was 2nd Overall in the National Series on a Yamaha Banshee. During this same time frame, from 1990, his sons Dusty and Cody were beginning their racing careers on quads. Dusty, his eldest, came away with 2nd in his class in 1990 in the GNCC National Series on an 80cc Suzuki quad. Cody, at just 3-1/2 years old, entered his very first race at Town and Country Days in Wetzel County, WV on a 70 quad and finished mid pack. Guy didn’t fool around getting Cody started.
In 1993, the Longwell gang switched back to bikes, deciding that they were a lot more fun than quads. Guy rode a Kawasaki KX 500 that year and in 1994 went to Loretta Lynn’s in the 40+ class after winning the area qualifier and the regional race. During the first moto at Loretta’s, he was in the top 10, but injured his ankle and had to finish the week with his ankle taped. He finished mid-pack that week with the bad ankle, but what an honor to be racing at Loretta Lynn’s, one of the premier tracks in the country. Many of the US National Champions have begun their racing career there.
Guys focus then shifted to his sons’ racing careers and after Dusty had moved into adulthood and left to make his way in the world, Cody carried on the tradition. Now a 125 A and 250 A Yamaha rider, #453 had the talent and the drive passed down from his dad. Cody not only won countless trophies and plaques, but also attended Loretta’s twice. Once on a 50cc and later in the Schoolboy class. Cody has also raced some National GNCC Series races and in 1998 he finished 4th in the 12-14 class.
So, is Guy Longwell qualified to teach a Motocross School? YOU BET!! He now enjoys and looks forward to attending all of Cody’s races (such as last years GNCC at St. Clairsville, OH), running the Fly MX Park motocross track at Fly, OH and putting on the BEST MX school in the Tri-State area. See more information on the “SCHOOL” page of this web site. Guy attends as many Pro races as possible and watches the rest on TV and picks up the latest techniques, along with keeping up with the newest mechanical advances of all bikes. He says, “There’s not a better feeling than when a student comes up to me and tells me how I’ve helped them”.
Remember Guy’s Motto “The best hop up for your bike is a faster you!”
